Autumn Winter 2017/18 Interior Design Trends

11/7/2017

AW 17/18
Below explores the trends that will out live the winter blues and see us into the New Year. These bright, light, bold and cultured trends have longevity with a wealth of pattern to explore.
PLANT LIFE

‘GREEN WITH ENVY’
A simple look full of natural beauty focuses on the smaller details, skillfully drawn and delicately balanced. Landscape scenery and life like foliage bring the outside feeling indoors with oversized elements enhanced by wild touches of exotic prints and luscious tones of green.
Brighter colours taking influence from tropical terrain add a sense of warmth with maple infused orange tones brought to life with saturated hues of flamingo pink and electric yellows.

GEOMETRIC
ABSTRACT FORM
Geometric pattern has stood the test of time and launches back into fashion with force. Flat 2D design is layered with linear elements of permanent marker style black outlines and block colour. It’s all about pattern clash with bright geometrics and bold colour creating contrast to the more simplistic of patterns, adding vibrant tone with iridescent layers of angular shapes.

WABI SABI
This ancient Japanese art of Wabi-sabi emphasises the use of organic materials and the acceptance of imperfection. Its origins lie within Zen Buddhism where it’s all about finding beauty in hand made goods with irregular characteristics.
Bold palettes of pumpkin orange, rustic red tones and grassy greens add focal points to neutral environments keeping colour at one with nature. Taking influence from traditional Japanese design, certain shrines and gates use these warm tones of orange and are believed to obstruct magical powers and evil spirits.
Handmade bowls and creased linens are a must, so leave your show home worries behind and embrace this eastern trend.

A GOLDEN AGE
INDULGE IN GLAMOUR AND GLITZ
Giving us a classy edge to an interior, gold covers a room with a certain allure of warmth. Pairing this metallic trend with deep tones of black and dark blue creates a contrast like a moon glow against a midnight backdrop of twilight. Opulent and timeless, a touch of gold adds a reflective quality and instantly lights up a room. Contrasting elements are hot on trend and as shown, gold works effortlessly against wooden or concrete textures giving a great clash of natural and man made materials.

MIXED MATERIALS
Mixing and matching creates visual interest so clashing complimentary textures is a great way to add tones of colour without being overly bold. Play with patterns and flow one into another and really show some diversity of style. Combinations of matt and high gloss surfaces work well together either to divide a space or just to add some variation of touch. We get excited by spaces that give ourselves different elements to view and so for this trend, more is definitely more!

This read was a great blast from the past, it's funny how quickly time and trends move on 😅

This really highlights how important natural influences on your design are. I was writing about 2021 trends just a couple of months ago and earthy tones and colours were a big part of it. You can read that piece here if you like - https://www.justanothermagazine.com/design/budget-friendly-2021-home-decor-trends/

I'll have to check out more of your posts after stumbling on this one!
